Taito City is one of the oldest urban areas in Tokyo.
It is an area with a rich natural environment, where good old townscapes can be seen everywhere, and parks, green areas, temples, and shrines remain. It is also an area of art, with the Genroku culture of the Edo period (1603-1867) and many art galleries and museums built in the Meiji period (1868-1912). The area is also characterized by many tourist attractions, such as Senso-ji Temple, famous for its 1,400-year-old Sanja Festival, Ameya Yokocho in Ueno, which is crowded with many shoppers, and Yushima Tenjin, the god of learning.
Ueno Station, the center of transportation, has long been used as a gateway from the northern Kanto and Tohoku regions, and is currently served by JR, private railway lines, and the Shinkansen bullet train.
